The AC Transit Board of Directors has given O.C. Jones & Sons the official $108 million construction contract to build & construct the East Bay's first bus rapid transit (BRT) line!
AC Transit's future sophisticated BRT lines will travel between 20th Street & Broadway, in Downtown Oakland, to San Leandro BART along International Boulevard.
The BRT system will replace AC Transit's existing Routes 1 and 1R, starting at 20h Street & Broadway. Unique transit signal technology will allow buses to partially control traffic lights, allowing a bus to pass through before turning red.
New, ultra-low emission 60-foot articulated buses manufactured locally by New Flyer will run on the BRT line. Each bus will have five doors to speed up the boarding and exiting process.
AC Transit's BRT system will be frequent as well - every 5 minutes during rush hours and every 10 minutes during off-peak times. Raised platform stops will be placed approximately every 1/3 of a mile.
The system will span 9.5 miles, with a majority of the line on International Boulevard and East 14th Street, in Oakland and San Leandro.
AC Transit's new BRT buses will also come with some innovative features - Interior bike racks will be included and new wheelchair tie-down systems will reduce dwell time while securing a person in a wheelchair.
The BRT line will make direct connections with 46 of AC Transit's bus lines, five BART stations, and Oakland International via a transfer to Route 73.

The SFMTA Board of Directors has approved the construction contract for the Van Ness Corridor Transit Improvement Project, which will be San Francisco's first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System.
This new BRT System will run on Van Ness Ave between Lombard and Mission Streets. The System is expected to open in 2019.
Chairman of the SFMTA Board of Directors, Tom Nolan, said, “This milestone is the latest example of how the City of San Francisco is coming together to get big projects done and improve our transportation network for everyone."
The SFMTA has adopted a new project delivery method that will increase the efficiency that the company delivers projects. Once the final design is approved, a maximum price will be established.
The Van Ness Corridor Transit Improvement Project is scheduled to begin construction in 2016. Two miles of transit-only lanes will be built in the center of Van Ness Ave, with enhanced platforms at stations, transit signals, and low-floor buses (buses accessible to everyone).
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2019, and will cut the travel time of the 47 and the 49 along Van Ness Ave by 30%.
Improvements for pedestrians along Van Ness Ave are also planned, ranging from new crosswalks to countdown signals, curb bulbs to shorten crossings, better visibility, and center refuges.
Replacement of the overhead wires, which provide power to zero-emission buses, as well as water and sewage systems, will be replaced on Van Ness Ave as well. Street repaving, landscaping and street lighting will also be carried out.
The Van Ness Corridor Transit Improvement Project Team and Walsh Construction Company will work together to establish a doable schedule for construction.
