CalTrain Approves New Fares and Parking Fees

Posted on December 9, 2015 at 5:05 PM Comments comments (0)

CalTrain is one of the fastest-growing rail systems in the Bay Area. Ridership is up over 70% from 2010. Rising maintenance & rail operations costs, plus no dedicated source of funding, has forced CalTrain to raise fares systemwide.

Fares for adults on CalTrain will rise 50 cents on February 28th, 2016. Parking will also raise by 50 cents on July 1st, 2016. Clipper passengers will still get a 15% discount. The monthly parking permit fee will also rise $5.

As a result of the fare change the Day Pass, 8-Ride Tickets, and Monthly Passes will all rise in fares as well. Discount fares will still be 50% off the adult tickets.

On Thanksgiving Day, CalTrain will operate a normal Sunday schedule of 32 trains, with shuttle service to and from Tamien Station. CalTrain service will stop at San Jose, not continuing south to Gilroy. There will be baby bullet trains in the morning and evening hours.

SamTrans will operate a normal Sunday schedule, which excludes all school bus routes that do not operate on a normal Sunday. Sunday service is, of course, less frequent than weekday service.

The day after Thanksgiving, CalTrain will operate a Saturday schedule, with shuttles running to and from Tamien Station. There will be baby bullet trains. SamTrans will operate a normal non-school day service.

Tilton Avenue Bridge to be Replaced, Bus Bridge in Place Nov. 7th

Posted on November 5, 2015 at 10:05 PM Comments comments (0)

Many CalTrain bridges are over 100 years old, including the Tilton Avenue Bridge in San Mateo. As part of the San Mateo Bridges Replacement Project, CalTrain will replace the Tilton Avenue Bridge over the weekend of November 7th and 8th, with work starting at 8 PM Friday, Nov. 6, and ending at 5 AM Monday, Nov. 9.

As crews work along the bridge, the entire CalTrain system will be affected. Since track at the Tilton Avenue Bridge will be closed, northbound trains will stop at Hayward Park, and southbound trains will stop at Burlingame.

Between the two stations, SamTrans will operate a bus bridge connecting the two stops on November 7th. By November 8th, CalTrain trains will be able to single-track across the Tilton Avenue Bridge, eliminating the bus bridge.

Riders can expect delays during single-tracking across the bridge and while the bus bridge is in place. The next bridge to be replaced in San Mateo will be in December, at the Monte Diablo Bridge.
